200 Word Description
The aim for my first project is to make and interactive and fun object which engages with sound as the primary sense. Alongside sound i believe touch is also very important, I think incorporating touch with sound would be a fun way to engage the user of an object like this.
The object I am going to experiment with is one which allows the user to make their own audio experience through using metal balls such as ball bearings, making a unique sound against a hard surface such as metal. I am hoping a metal plate, or aluminium will suit this idea, however I need to experiment with this to see what different noises can be made from different materials. The user will drop the metal balls onto a flat surface which slopes down to a drop tray at the bottom. There will be different paths the user can make the ball bearings travel along depending on what sound they wish to create. When the bearings hit the tray at the end of the slide, a distinctive sound will be made, varying from hollow and deep at one end of the tray, to a high pitch sound at the other.
The idea of this object is to allow the user to create their own tune, and engage with different ways to make sound through these materials.
Research
These are some images i have found which show some of my thoughts on materials and concepts of what i can do in my first project which will be interactive and fun involving the senses.
